Reading Minute

I read from the Chicken Soup for the soul series. The edition of the siries is the Chicken Soup for the Cat and Dog Lover's Soul. The short story I read was called Medicine Cat. This story is about a women who moves in with he daughter because she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The old woman is told that she only was a few more weeks to live and that is it. Usually, the woman doesn't like her daughter's dog and cats, but for some reason, when she moved in, her daughters cat, Otto immediatly warmed up to her. The unusual calico senses the old womans pain and spent every second possible with her. Weeks passed and the woman was still living far past the expectations of her doctors. The woman was soon able to get up on her own and walk around, with the nightly routen of getting Otto fresh water. Three years passed and when she went back to the doctor the cancer had vanished. Both the woman and her daughter believe Otto had become a son like figure in the ailing womans life and was an incentive for her to keep fighting. Today, they are both still alive, happy and together.

The article that I found was from cnn.com. The title is "China: More eggs found containing melamine". This article is about eggs in China that have been found to be contaminated by the chemical melamine. These contaminated eggs were found in a batch from Hubei province in China. Although the melamine content is much lower then the earlier cases, it is still above legal limit and must be disposed of. Along with the eggs form Hubei, health officials say they found more contaminated eggs form Changzhi City Green Biological Development Center, from Shanxi Province. This melamine that is being found in the eggs is a chemical that is used to make fertalizers and plastics. Melamine has been used in foods all over China illegally to suggest that the foods contain a higher protien level. Health officials say that the eggs contain so little melamine cemicals that it would take 20 eggs a day to have any effect on the child. This melamine scare has led to many governments banning food comming from China that could contain any amounts on melamine. The article I found was from cnn.com. The title of the article was "Five pirate attacks repelled off Somalia in one day". The article is about ships that have been getting hijacked off of the coast of Somalian by Somalian pirates. Records show that there have been more then sixty ships attacked in the Gulf of Aden just this year, which is two times more then in 2007. The pirates are holding the ships ransom for 18-30 million dollars. This money that the Somalian pirates recieve from the ships is beening put to work and helping out with the Civil war that is going on in Somalia. NATO is doing its best to try to protect UN ships from being hijacked and already has succeeded in dispatching seven of them. These ships were carring food to the Somalian people because of the famine in Somalia. As of now, pirates are still holding a Ukrainian ship that is carrying Soviet-made tanks, grenade launchers adn small arms off of the coast of Somalian and are demanding a ransom of 20 million dollars. Outside Reading #8

I found this article at cnn.com. It is about a Arkansas anchorwoman, Anne Pressly, who died on Saturday. She was beaten in her home and was found several hours later on Monday. She had serious injuries to her face and most of the other injuries were on her upper body. She was hospitalized imediatly and was sedated. Pressly was unable to talk and suffered from brain swelling. Police say that Anne was part of a burglary because her purse had been stolen, but her dad thinks otherwise. He thinks that her killer had a motive for going to Pressly's house and beating her. He thinks that it possibly could have been a stalker. She was said to be getting much better and improving on her conditions when she died. The nightly news cast from the station she worked at held a 7 minute segment devoted to Anne Pressly. The article I read was from cnn.com. This article was about two men that were killed on Tuesday in a Colombian riot. The two men where in the burgeoning Indian protest in Southwestern Colombia and they were on there way to go reject the government. The protesters are looking to have the Colombian government set aside more land for the 1.3 million indians living in Colombia today, provide better education and more money for health care. The police say that one of the men was shot from a nother Indian from within the crowd and the other was shot by police. Since then, demonstrators have blocked the Pan-American highway, fired slingshots and hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails in occational clashes with riot police. Parent Heroes

Parents. They are the unseen heroes of our world today. They are always there for you when you need them most. They can save you from almost any situation you are stuck in and help you out. Both biological and foster parents are amazing humans that can trust and tell anything to.



This is a picture of a family. They are happy and love eachother very much.

Foster parents are one of the biggest heroes in our society today. They save kids from going though life without parents and give them a home. They give them good education, love and support.

Foster Parents help kids like these and help them live. They take these kids out of there misory and give them hope for their future.

Parent Poems
Parents are the unsung heroes of every person that has ever done anything great. Think about the people that you most admire in your life. Do you attribute any of their greatness to the people that raised them? Often, we do not even think about the fact that there were most likely two people who were most influential in making a person who they are. Of course I am referring to his or her parents. If a person is great, remember that greatness is not achieved in a vacuum. There were people who sowed the seeds of greatness.

Outside Reading #6

This article was found on cnn.com. It is about a boy named Cole who was found Sunday morning after being kidnapped on Wednesday night. The boy was taking form his home in Las Vegas by a man knew the family. The man had tied up both Coles mother and father in search for money but, when they couldnt find any money they settled for Cole. The kidnapper had know Coles grandfather and had been involed in multiple drug deal with him. The man responsible for Coles kisnapping was said to be trying to get the money back that Coles grandfather, Clemons, who had taken millions from him during a drug deal. Police spent the rest of the week looking for the boy when someone called in saying they had seen a boy that looked like Cole walking alone on the sidewalks in Las Vegas. Luckily police found Cole and he is home safe and sound. Although Cole was safe and home, the police had arrested his grandfather for his involvement with drugs and police are hoping to find much more information about the case. The title of the article that I read was "In dissection protest, teen's name is now Cutout Dissection.com". It is about a girl who legally changed her name from Jennifer Thornburg, to Cutout Dissection.com. The reason that she changed her name was to help protest agains the disection of animals in schools. She believes that people who do not enjoy disecting animal or are not comfortable disecting them, that the student should have the option to do an alternative assignment. The name of the article that i read was "Beloved pup's fate becomes international cause". This article was about a army sargent named Gwen Beberg and how she found a best friend. While serving our country in Iraq, Qwen found the black and white dog, named Ratchet, in a flaming pile of trash and from then on out they have been best friend. Although there is a law in all army camps saying that no animal are allowed, she still love and took care of the dog. Now she is fighting to get the dog back home only to find that people in Iraq are planning to kill Ratchet. Qwen in trying everything possible to save Ratchet. The article that i read was named "Gas prices drop: Closing in on $3". It is about how the average gas price around the United States is dropping to close to 3 dollars a gallon. The reason for the lowering gas prices is because it is getting close to the end of hurricane season and the demand weakens as the economy slows. There are 6 states that have made it lower then $3. These 6 states are Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Oklahoma, where the average price is about $2.83. Alaska and Hawaii are at the highest average price of about $4.00. I read an article from cnn.com. It was about Steve Fossett and his disapperance. Steve Fossett was a millionar that made his money in the financial service industry, but most people know him for his dare devil exploits. He was the first person to travel the world in a hot air balloon by himself and he was the first to fly around the globe solo without refueling. On September 3, 2007 Fossett was last seen getting onto his plane to go for a ride. He ended up crashing and and his plane was just found on Wensday October 1, 2008, a full year later. His plane was found at an elevation of about 10,000 in the Sierra Nevadas. Along with the crashed plane, investigators found a piece of bone that is though to be either Steve Fossett's or an aminal bone. The article I read was from cnn.com. It is about tainted milk that was found in Austria. The milk was contaminated by the chemical malemine. This chemical is used to make plastic and also fertilizer. The malemine was found in a milkshake in Austria that was made with Chinese milk. This finding led to tests on at least 184 types of Chinese food that was sold Austria. Although the milk has been the only product that was contaminated, the European Union banned or recalled all Chinese dairy products. Malemine isnt very deadly, but if enough if digested, it can lead to kidney stones or even kidney failure. The chemical has cause 50,000 children in China to become very ill and has caused the death of 4 babys. ANIMAL DREAMS!!

One of the quotes that I like was a line said by Loyd when him and Codi meet for the first time in high school. He says "Are you kidding me? How many beautiful six-foot-tall women do you think we have in this town?"(pg 62). I like this line because it shows how thoughtful Loyd is. Although he is thought of as a ladies man, he still remembers Cosima from high school. Him remembering Codi after so many years shows us that he is more then just a ladies man.
My favorite character in this novel is Loyd. Loyd knows what he wants in life, unlike Codi. He is also very loving towards Codi. We can tell that he really likes her and want a better relationship with her because of all the things he is doing for her. He wants to show her where he grew up and he wants to share his life with her, which shows that he does love her. Loyd is also a very calm and relax person with a lot of patients and is willing to help Codi realize what she wants out of life.
The most important scene in the book is at the beginning of chapter 1 when Homero is looking in on the two girls while they sleep. I think that this is the most important scenes because it foreshadows a lot of the book. It states how close the two girls are and how much they have already lost and how much they have to lose. This is foreshadowing that they might lose each other in one way or another. It also points out from the beginning that these to girls are almost like one, which, later on in the book, turns out to be Codi's down fall.

Recently Read

One of the books that I read over the summer was Revenge of the Wannabes by Lisi Harrison. This book is one out of a series of books. I decided to read this book because I had read the first two books from the collection and really liked them. So I thought that I would continue reading the next book from that series. This book doesn't have to much of an important moral behind it but it is more for a fun read. I ended up really enjoying the book and wanted more to read.

Favorite book!

One of my favorite books is Holes, by Louis Sachar. In this book, the main character Stanley Yelnats always seems to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. He is accused of a crime that he didn't commit and has the choice to either go to jail or go to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile delinquent camp. Stanley's decision is to go to the Texas camp. There, he is to dig a hole a day to "build character" and later finds himself, and many great friends. I like this book because it shows that something good can come from any bad situation. It also is a good example of hard work and perseverance.
